The medical program provides students with a variety of paths to enter the healthcare industry. The options for students include Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, and Emergency Medical Technician.
Certified Nursing Assistant

Opportunities Upon Completion
Certified Nursing Assistants earn approximately $12/hour at hospitals, doctor’s offices, clinics, or nursing homes. Students may also pursue a post-secondary education in the medical field.
Requirements
11th and 12th graders
Age 16 by September 1
C in biology
Up-to-date immunization records
State background check & fingerprinting
State identification card (could be driver's license)
Physical examination obtain through own insurance

Students Learn
Introductory Anatomy & Physiology Principles
Administrative & Clinical Procedures including bathing, feeding, catheter care
Acquiring, distributing, and administering patient care supplies
Safety Checks
Cleanliness
Accommodating the special needs of patients
Obtaining and monitoring vital signs
Providing emotional support to patients and families, particularly coping with grief and death

Certified Nursing Assistant students have the opportunity to earn dual enrollment with SLCC.
Uniform Requirements
Dark gray (charcoal) scrub pants with a dark gray (charcoal) scrub top from Lafayette Bargain Store. Have the top monogrammed with the school logo.
Optional: Dark gray (charcoal) lab jacket
Students may wear a long-sleeve white, black, or gray shirt under the scrub top.
Gray, white, or black lace-up tennis shoes (non-cloth recommended)

Medical Assistant
Medical Assistants perform clinical and administrative duties and directly assist physicians. The curriculum and certification test are more demanding than Certified Nursing Assistant.

Medical Assistant students have the opportunity to earn dual enrollment with SLCC.
Opportunities Upon Completion
Medical Assistants earn approximately $16/hour at hospitals, physician’s offices, clinics, medical records, laboratories, insurance companies or nursing homes. Students may also pursue a post-secondary education in the medical field.

More challenging curriculum and certification exam than CNA
At least a C in algebra and biology requied

Administrative and Clinical Procedures including taking vital signs, performing EKG, phlebotomy, laboratory procedures, and administering injections and medications
