About J. Wallace James
J. Wallace James Elementary School opened its doors in 2002 as the parish's first School of Choice. J. Wallace James has no school zone and is populated entirely by children who have chosen to attend the school. Dedicated to excellence in academics, technology, and the arts, James engages students from Pre-K through 5th grade in exciting special programs in a nurturing, success-oriented environment.
Technology and The Arts
J. Wallace James is a Leader in Me school, and a member of the Louisiana A+ Network of Schools that foster arts integration in the classroom. Specialists in the area of technology, visual arts, and performing arts are full-time members of the professional staff. Skills in technology and the arts are taught in combination with academic standards.
The school houses a visual arts studio, dance studio, and production and performance areas. PreK-5th grade students with no previous art or music instruction are welcome. The music program includes vocal and choral training, music appreciation, and instrument training. Students have many different opportunities to learn an instrument, including: strings, piano, band, and guitar. J. Wallace James also offers theater production, drama, dance, and visual art instruction. Students explore all aspects of visual art, including: drawing, painting, printmaking, pottery, and sculpture.
Technology and education are a powerful combination that makes learning come alive. At James, students become involved in all aspects of technology; in addition to every student having a dedicated device, students have access to an in-house television studio, robotics, coding, interactive boards, and multimedia capabilities.
In addition to an outstanding curriculum, exposure to the arts, and hands-on experience in technology, J. Wallace James Elementary offers students the opportunity to continue their pursuit of the arts and technology as they move on to middle school.
James also offers extended care services, which begins one hour before the first bell and continues one and a half hours after the last bell. Students in the extended care program receive a snack, academic tutoring, homework monitoring, and enrichment in technology.
Our Vision
We at J. Wallace James Arts and Technology Academy believe that in order to maximize the academic and artistic potential of our students, they must be provided with a nurturing and safe environment where academics, dance, drama, visual arts, music, and technology are integral parts of developing the whole child. Our staff, which consists of professional educators specializing in academics, fine arts, and technology along with visiting artists, collaborates to create integrated and interdisciplinary activities that foster personal development in an environment of respect, self-worth, safety, and self-discipline. We believe these components are essential to the development of scholastic achievement, critical thinking, problem-solving, and lifelong learning.
