Finding Focus, Fueling Success: How One Student’s Journey Exemplifies the Power of Opportunity in Public Education

Finding Focus

Education is not a one-size-fits-all journey. For some students, the traditional classroom provides the right balance of guidance and independence. For others, rigid pacing and standardized expectations create roadblocks rather than pathways to success. But when schools recognize the individual needs of students, remarkable transformations can take place.

Few stories exemplify this more than Christini Faulk’s—a young student whose academic trajectory shifted dramatically when given the right opportunity to thrive.

Christini began her education in a charter school setting, enrolled at Willow Charter. Despite her potential, she struggled with motivation and focus, often feeling unchallenged and uninspired. Like many students, she needed an environment that didn’t just move her from one grade to the next, but rather one that actively engaged, challenged, and supported her growth.

That environment turned out to be Edward J. Sam Accelerated School of Lafayette, an alternative academic program within Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) designed for students seeking a different approach to education—one that provides structure, flexibility, and acceleration. The decision to enroll her at EJ Sam changed everything.

In just nine months, Christini completed both seventh and eighth grades, an academic feat in itself, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. The culture of high expectations and individualized support at EJ Sam helped her not only rediscover her motivation but pushed her to set new standards for herself. Teachers quickly noticed her intense drive—if she earns anything less than a perfect score, she pushes herself harder, determined to meet the highest standards she has set for herself.

Her parents give immense credit to the teachers and leadership at EJ Sam, particularly Principal Ms. Renee White, whose vision and commitment have shaped the school into a place where students like Christini can rewrite their educational narratives.

"This school has allowed Christini to focus and has motivated her to come home and do homework after school and on the weekends," her mother shared.

Her father echoed this, stating, "She will stay at EJ Sam the whole way through graduation. We couldn't be more happy."

Their gratitude speaks to a larger truth: education is not just about curriculum—it’s about leadership, culture, and the willingness to meet students where they are and push them to where they can be.

Christini’s success is not an accident—it is a testament to what can happen when a school system prioritizes opportunities over obstacles. LPSS believes that students should never be confined by a singular educational pathway. Some excel in traditional classrooms, while others, like Christini, need a system that values their unique strengths and aspirations. This belief is at the heart of the district’s Experience the Difference initiative—ensuring that every student, regardless of background or learning style, has access to an education that works for them.

At a time when education policy is frequently debated, Christini’s story is a powerful reminder that public education is not about politics—it’s about people. It’s about recognizing that students are individuals with unique strengths, challenges, and goals. By expanding options, rather than restricting them, school districts can unlock limitless potential.

As Christini continues her journey at EJ Sam, she carries with her the proof that opportunity breeds success. She is not just catching up—she is forging ahead.

And for students like Christini, and the countless others waiting for their own breakthrough moment, LPSS stands ready to provide the pathway that makes all the difference.
