The Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) is offering an opportunity for individuals to train and sign up as substitute bus drivers. While LPSS is fortunate to have nearly 100% of its bus routes covered by regular drivers, substitute drivers are critical when regular drivers are out due to illness or leave.
Transportation Operations Manager Ross Cloteaux emphasizes the importance of ensuring students have reliable transportation to school. “Getting all kids to school for instruction is always our goal, but it can become challenging when no substitute is available. We never want to notify parents that their student’s bus route won’t be run. When this happens, it’s because we’ve exhausted all options in finding a driver to fill in. The more substitutes we have, the less likely it is that a route will need to be canceled for the day.”
If a route is canceled, the responsibility falls on parents or guardians to ensure students make it to school. LPSS understands that not all families have access to transportation, which can create stress for both parents and the school system.
To help streamline the process for becoming a substitute bus driver, Cloteaux has introduced three-day Dtraining classes. These classes allow interested individuals to move quickly through the necessary steps to get certified. You’ll find the schedule of classes below.
