LPSS Parent Workshops Empower Families and Strengthen Communities

LPSS Parent Workshops

The LPSS Parent Workshops are proving to be more than just meetings—they’re transformative experiences that empower families to support their children’s success in meaningful ways.

Spearheaded by LPSS Lead Social Worker Melissa Arceneaux and in partnership with SOAR Program Director Ms. Tara Walker, these workshops bring parents, educators, and community members together for practical, impactful learning. With two workshops already completed this year and one more scheduled for February, the program has touched countless families across the district.

“Our goal is to equip families with tools and resources to navigate the challenges of raising school-aged children,” said Arceneaux. “We focus on topics that are relevant and impactful, presented by our very own LPSS Social Workers and Counselors.”

Each workshop offers four dynamic sessions on topics selected to address the diverse needs of families. Some of the most popular topics include:

How to Handle Conflicts at Home: Strategies to create a more peaceful and cooperative environment.

ADHD Support and Understanding: Building skills and resources to help children thrive.

Parent-Child Communication: Tips for fostering trust and understanding through active listening.

Preparing Children for School: Establishing routines and setting expectations for success.

Parents left the sessions with fresh insights and practical strategies. Feedback included comments such as:

"Learning various ways of handling conflicts at home was incredibly helpful.”

"Understanding what goes through my little human’s brain on a daily basis gave me a new perspective.”

"ADHD doesn’t define you. It reminded me that our kids need support and skills to help them become successful adults.”

The workshops wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support of the LPSS community. Arceneaux and Walker extend their heartfelt thanks to:

Our Principals, for hosting the events at their schools.

LPSS Social Workers and Counselors, for their expert and engaging presentations.

Teachers and staff, for supervising children with activities during the workshops.

Love Our Schools, for providing pizza for all participants and students.

Board members for attending and supporting the workshops.

The workshops also provide free childcare and dinner, thanks to contributions from community partners, making it easier for families to attend.

Mark your calendar for the next Parent Workshop on February 27 at K. Drexel Elementary from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Stay tuned for details on the topics and how to register!

Thank you to all the families who participated—we look forward to seeing you at the next session!
