Information on the French Immersion Program

The French immersion offers students the opportunity to participate in World

Language Immersion, a program that integrates second language learning into

various subject areas. Children will follow the regular school curriculum, including

an English language arts block (reading, writing, spelling) taught by a certified

English-speaking teacher. The rest of the school day, including math, science,

physical education and art, is conducted entirely in French by qualified

elementary school teachers  using repetition, pictures, gestures, experiences and

other appropriate means tohelp students understand content area instruction in

selected subjects as well as in target language arts.

We start the immersion process at a young age, when children's minds are more

open. Research has shown that students in Immersion programs, on average,

perform better on standardized tests than do their non-immersion peers.

Students who begin immersion are encouraged to remain in French immersion

classes through 8th grade.

Introducing Our French Immersion Teachers

 Kindergarten French Immersion Teachers

Mme V. Missier

I'm originally from France and lived in the Alps in a town named Grenoble

surrounded by mountains.   I came to Louisiana with my family.  I have three

boys: they are eleven, nine, and seven.  My husband is a teacher too and also

works for the Lafayette Parish School System.

I've taught for eleven years in France. I came here to teach French, and to

have a different experience of teaching. I like children and working with

them. I like skiing, hiking and being in nature. I enjoy being in Louisiana.

My name is Sybille de Meulemeester, I am Belgian and I have taught eight

years in Belgium and eight years here in kindergarten at Evangeline

Elementary in the French immersion program.  My goal is to introduce

French in a way that children understand directions and can hold daily

conversations.

What I like the most about the French immersion program is being able to

hear the children communicate with me and other French speakers, using

the vocabulary that I have taught them.  This makes them more successful

at school and instills good study habits that will last a lifetime.

My name is Frédérique de Ville. Students call me "Madame Fred".  I am from

Belgium and moved to Lafayette, Louisiana in 2001 to be a teacher in the

French Immersion Program. I have been teaching first grade at Evangeline

Elementary for eleven years now. I love my job and my students.

Last February, I got married to a Cajun man from Eunice. When I am not at

school, I enjoy reading French novels, swimming, sewing new costumes,

fishing, and camping in the State Parks around Lafayette. I also like

volunteering at local music festivals.

I think French Immersion is an excellent program and I am happy to be a

part of it. I wouldn't do anything else than this!

 Second Grade French Immersion Teachers

Hello Evangeline learning community. My name is Yvan Favreau. I am a

dedicated French immersion second grade teacher. I come from Québec,

Canada. My first language is French, the same as many of the grandparents

and great grandparents of the Lafayette area are. I taught French in a few

other countries including Mexico, Turkey, Taiwan and Bangladesh. I am very

glad to be a part of Evangeline Learning Community. I have been practicing

yoga for 9 years and I am also a Yoga Certified Teacher. I enjoy jogging and

 Fourth Grade French Immersion Teachers

My name's Julien Dal-toé, I was born in 1973 in France. I grew up and lived

in Aix Les Bains, a town in the Alps surrounded by mountains and beside the

bigger French natural lake. I enjoy sports, running, swimming, hiking,

climbing, mountaineering, cycling and skiing. I like movies, literature and

music. I play the guitar in a rock'n'roll band. I've got a masters degree in

cultural affairs. I worked 4 years in the movie industry before becoming a

teacher. I taught 5 years in France, including 4 years as principal of a 6

classes school. I arrived in America on the 24th of July. I'd always dreamt

to discover America. American music, movies and literature have been

feeding me for years. As a nature lover, the West has an irresistible

attraction on me. So, it's like a dream comes true, driving in the landscapes

described in William Faulkner's books or John Ford's movies while listening

to Bob Dylan...

Furthermore, it's such a good experience being in the shoes of an

"immigrant ". It's really a way to be more open-minded. The discovery of a

new education system is very interesting. What I like the most in the

French immersion is the relationship with my students. It's a joy to see

them everyday, I learn as much from them as they learn from me. The way

they imagine France, their hobbies - it's amazing!  As a teacher, my first

purpose is to make children happy to go to school, happy to learn by

themselves and be persuaded by the interest of culture and knowledge for

the building of a better world with more equality and brotherhood.

I am Moussa Sadou. I have taught 4th Grade in the French Immersion

Program at Evangeline Elementary since 2002.  Evangeline is a school that I

love so much.

I came from Niger, a country in the western part of Africa. There I was

teacher and also a principal. I also taught my culture, the French language,

and two other local languages to the Peace Corps Volunteers from the

United States.

Beside my teaching position at Evangeline, I am also in charge of the

Extended Learning Program who provides homework assistance.

Merci et Au revoir mes Amis!!!!

 Fifth Grade French Immersion Teacher

My name is Serigne Fall but most people call me by my middle name which is

Bamba. I have spent my life in three different countries, three different

continents.  My birthplace is Senegal, but I grew up in Belgium and have

been teaching in Louisiana for a decade. I am a 36 year old man married to

the beautiful Kadia and we have two children named after my parents. I am

the 5th grade French Immersion teacher looking forward to a great year

and will do everything for it.   Merci!
