English 1 Gifted (9th grade)
NOTE: The purpose of summer reading is to encourage a love of reading and to keep students involved in learning throughout the summer. Although these titles were chosen according to theme, relevance, age appropriateness, and reading level, they represent a varied range of Lexile levels and some novels may contain mature content. We suggest parents review the content of these novels with their children before making selections.
Over the summer, please read ONE of the following novels:
- Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
- Lord of the Flies by William Golding
- To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
- The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon
Non-Fiction:
- Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell
- Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner
While you are not being asked to complete a formal assignment on your selected novel ahead of the first week of school, you are expected to read one of the four novel choices fully prior to your second day of English I (G), as you will complete several literary analysis assignments for accountability and assessment purposes.
It is highly recommended that you have your own copy of the book and bring it to school during the first two weeks so that you can reference it as needed.
Additionally, please read the original text and refrain from watching the filmed adaptations; we reserve select clips for an adapting literature seminar later in the semester.
