Garden Initiative
The Lafayette Parish Master Gardener Association in conjunction with the Lafayette 4-H Program established a school garden initiative in an effort to engage youth and improve academics, life skill development and healthy living. The program was designed to provide the horticulture-based knowledge one needs to create a garden. The garden initiative has been incorporated as part of the school curriculum. The garden is used as an outdoor laboratory and the lessons help with the teaching of science, math, history, language arts, and physical education. Students are taught the importance of making good nutritional choices and living a healthy lifestyle.
Throughout the school year, fourth grade students are a part of the decision making process as it relates to basic gardening. Students prepare the soil, choose the crops, plant the seeds, weed, and harvest the crop. Some of the food that is harvested is donated to LARC. The harvest is also used for healthy food demonstrations and the annual cook-off. Charles Burke won first place in the cook-off in 2017.
